About the work

An estate cleanout empties a home after a death, a move to assisted living or a downsize. A good crew sorts as it goes: items the family wants kept, items to donate or sell, documents to set aside, and what goes to the dump. Most quote by the truckload or by the job after a walkthrough, and many coordinate with the executor or realtor so the house is ready to list.

Service area: Chicago, Illinois and nearby.

Good questions to ask before any job

• •Do you do a walkthrough first and give a written, all-in price?
• •How do you handle items the family wants to keep, donate or sell?
• •Will you set aside papers, photos, cash and jewelry you find instead of tossing them?
• •Do you leave the house broom-clean and ready for the realtor or the next owner?
• •Are you licensed for hauling and insured for damage to the property?
